Commuting Trip Rate of the Private Cars Based on Differentiation of Household Income in Guangzhou

Commuting trip rate (CTR) of private cars is an important factor related to the traffic jam during peak hours. To relieve congestion, some transportation policies to cut down CTR are proposed. In order to study the effectiveness of the policies in Guangzhou, a series of logistic models are built up and quantitative analyses on changes of household CTR of private cars with different income are given. Results show that when the destination parking fees rise by 30%, CTR of private cars decreases by 14.46%; when fuel costs rise by 30%, it decreases by 36.89%. However, when the waiting time of buses decreases by 30%, CTR only decreases by 10.42%. Thus, a single strategy, e.g. only improving the bus service, is not effective enough to attract private car commuters to the public transit system. The conclusions help policy makers to understand the traffic demand of private cars with different household income.
