This paper presents cellular transportation from a droplet on an originator plate to a droplet on an opposing receiver plate by contact fusion of the two droplets. This technique can be applied to the exchange of medium, drug delivery, and in situ characterization for hanging droplet cell cultures. Our study allows patterning of droplet arrays on the receiver plate in ways that facilitate contact fusion of droplets to occur at their locations on the receiver plate. Photoresponsive wettability of titanium dioxide patterns was used for patterning of the droplets. Hanging droplet cell culture successfully demonstrated exchange of medium via the contact fusion of droplets. This paper reports the proposed strategy, droplet array formation, cellular transportation, and liquid transportation for exchange of the medium and drug delivery.
