1. For most of our lives, airlines have relied on operation planning as the sole means of ensuring operational success. 1.1 I guess we all listened to our mothers when they said... "Those who fail to plan, plan to fail." 2. Airlines have, over the last two decades, slowly recognized that there is more to operations than good planning. 2.1 We have realized that, while good planning is a necessary condition for good performance, it is not a sufficient condition. 3. Not much work has been done to date on determining the right balance between planning and recovery. 4. Simulation and machine learning are a potential solution.
