3D Numerical Study in a Solar Collector: Effect of Prandtl Number

Flat-plate solar water heater is accounted in this study numerically. The 3D governing partial differential equations are solved using finite element method (FEM). In order to evaluate the temperature and velocity profiles inside the collector, the energy balance equation and Navier Stokes equation are solved. Results are shown interms of streamline pattern. Average Nusselt number at the riser pipe inner surface, mean bulk temperature, average velocity, mid-height temperature, mean output temperature and collector efficiency for water through the flat plate solar collector are presented as function of the Prandtl number. It is observed that increasing viscous force enhances heat transfer but decreases thermal efficiency.
