This paper focuses on the fault-tolerant control of open-circuit fault that includes power switch fault and armature winding fault for permanent magnet starter/generator (PMS/G) system. A redundant leg is applied to the three-phase converter to substitute the faulted leg when open-circuit fault occurs in the power switches, while there is an fault in the armature winding, the neutral point of the PMS/G is connected to the middle point of the redundant leg to produce a path for zero sequence current, and a current compensating method is proposed in the vector control strategy to maintain the magnetomotive force (MMF). This method can ensure the stability of the output torque and the DC-link voltage when open-circuit fault occurs. The system performance is almost unchanged with power switch fault, and the output power will be reduced with armature winding fault. Simulation results show that the proposed topology and fault-tolerant control method are feasible for PMS/G system.
