Past literature has shown that ALP expression is more robust at day 14 than on day 7. The increased expression of ALP on the laser-etched titanium surface on day 7 could indicate that this surface is promoting earlier mineralization of the extracellular matrix than RBT or machined surfaces. The greater expression of ALP on the laser-etched surface at an earlier time and the increased cellular proliferation suggest increased osteogenic differentiation, which could explain the greater degree healing observed on this surface in vivo.
