摘要

Water scarcity is becoming a global concern as population grows and urban sprawls expand. High water risk areas are also becoming a serious limiting factor for industrial growth as facilities require water for their production process and utilities, like boilers, cooling towers, etc. PepsiCo has a global "Net Zero" environmental sustainable approach toward its management of water, energy and solid waste. This approach was implemented in their Frito-Lay Production Plants in Mexico (PepsiCo Alimentos Mexico / Sabritas) that carry brands, such as Lay's, Cheetos, Fritos, Doritos and Ruffles as part of the PepsiCo Performance with Purpose Strategy. The company has fifteen food manufacturing facilities in Mexico and decided to implement wastewater recovery and reuse projects in eight of their main plants to achieve a water reuse goal of 50-70%. PepsiCo Alimentos Mexico chose to upgrade existing conventional wastewater treatment plants with Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology which combines secondary and tertiary treatment in one step. At the core of the MBR is an ultrafiltration membrane that provides an absolute barrier for suspended solids, so MBR becomes a perfect pre-treatment for reverse Osmosis (RO) to provide high quality treated wastewater for reuse applications. In 2010 and 2011 PepsiCo Alimentos Mexico implemented the upgrade of the following WWTP: Sabritas Vallejo Mexico City, original flow of 317,000 gpd (1,200 m3/d) and currently expanding to 554,800 gpd (2,100 m3/d); Sabritas Guadalajara, Jalisco original flow 356,600 gpd (1,350 m3/d) and currently expanding to 383,000 gpd (1,450 m3/d), and Sabritas Saltillo, Coahuila, 475,500 gpd (1,800 m3/d) with future expansion to 581,180 gpd (2,200 m3/d). This paper will present key information related to the MBR system design, start-up and operation, giving special attention to design recommendations to be able to achieve consistent wastewater quality for the purpose of reuse. The procedures to achieve a successful start-up will be discussed and the performance data (biological and membrane performance) for the first 7 years of operation. The reuse of water (up to 77%) has helped these three facilities achieve and surpass their targets, decrease demand of city water, and reduce sewer surcharges.
