The history of tea goes back a long way in time. Originating in China, tea was first used as detoxification medicine and over time it gradually became a thirst quenching beverage. Today, tea is a spiritual drink. The moment it connected with the human mind, tea ceased to be an ordinary physical phenomenon. It has penetrated the human psyche interweaving a vibrant and unique culture. At the same time, it chronicles the course of spiritual development and refinement from "sipping tea to refresh the mind" (pin ming qing xin)" to "tea and Chan are of one flavor (cha chan yi wei)." The introduction sets forth the reasons, background, goals and procedures of this study. It gives an overview of the relationship between tea and meditative concentration and discusses how the tea-centered Chan koans demonstrate the doctrinal essence in the expression "tea and Chan are of one flavor." Literature review was used to explore the origin of tea and Chinese tea culture, the origin of Chan and the Chinese Chan School, as well as how tea culture and Chan came to integrate and culminate into the aphorism "tea and Chan are of one flavor." The conclusion: In the course of the development of tea culture, the expression "tea and Chan are of one flavor" embodies the splendor of prajna wisdom sparked by the fusion of tea culture and the Buddhist Chan School. Laymen look at this spectacular phenomenon and marvel how the merging of tea and Chan enriches the tea culture with the enigmatic flavor of Chan, whereas adepts discover the transcendental essence revealed by the aphorism. Each person sees what they are capable of seeing.
