A novel triangular-shaped electrodes differential capacitance sensor (TEDCS) is designed for measuring the average velocity of metal particles within the small-diameter pipeline in this study. Firstly the axial sensitivity distribution of the TEDCS is analyzed by finite element method. Then the spatial filtering effect of the TEDCS for velocity measurement is investigated. Results indicate that the velocity of the metal particles can be obtained by determining the equivalent peak frequency of the differential output signals of the TEDCS. Finally a TEDCS-based metal particles velocity measurement system is further developed and the experimental test results on a gravity-fed particle flow experimental apparatus are presented. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the measurement method has a good repeatability, and the repeatability errors of the measured velocity are less than 8% over the velocity range of 2.44 $sim$ 5.34 m/s.
