Bulk modification of PLLA with the functional additives of thermal stabilizer and plasticizer synergistically enhanced thermal stability and mechanical properties of PLLA. In addition, further incorporation of MH nanoparticles into bulk modified PLLA significantly reduced the in vitro inflammatory response due to efficient neutralization of acidic byproducts of degraded PLLA by MH nanoparticles. This work suggests a new platform in designing a biodegradable cardiovascular implants including stents with improved thermal and mechanical properties and reduced inflammatory response.
