Our results demonstrate that the FRESH bioprinting process is capable of fabricating collagen scaffolds with microscale resolution over centimeter length scales. Cell-driven compaction of a fibrin gel around these scaffolds guides cellular organization and alignment. Future studies will focus on simultaneous cell deposition through a dual-material extrusion system, which will provide an alternative to compaction-driven cell seeding. This should enable the 3D printing of more complex 3D skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue constructs.
