The introduction presents shortly the European Union standard system for steel structures,completed in 2006.The future six EU essential requirements for construction works and products,created to express the sustainability paradigm,are then presented.Then,key numbers and thoughts on construction sector and sustainability are shown.Steel construction has many advantages that meet are in aggreement with sustainable development requirements.It is shown that this is an opportunity for innovation as a result for a need to improve the life-cycle cost of structures:to erect faster,to promote multi-materials and multi-functional structural elements,to last longer,to increase part of steel in refurbishment.Several innovative structural systems and products on which research is going on in Europe are presented,such as high strength low alloy cast steels,steel w/structural glass elements,or stainless steel structural elements.
