To aid in development of a virtual reality system for encouraging the elderly in therapeutic gait training, we recorded such training performed with parallel bars with a video camera. Analysis of the verbal communication of physical therapists and the responses of the elderly confirmed the effectiveness of verbal encouragements. Such encouragement was categorized by the time of its communication and by its content. An algorithm for encouraging the elderly by verbal communication is proposed.
