It has been well reported that the resistance of soil structure is the same important as the stress history and the initial water content in interpreting the mechanical behavior for most natural soils. For assessing the effects of the resistance of soil structure of the mechanical behavior, Burland has proposed the so-called intrinsic compression line (ICL) and the sedimentation compression line (SCL) with introducing a normalizing parameter called the void index. However,t he sensitive clays are not included in his study. The extensive data on sensitivie Ariake clays are used in this study to investigate the compression behavior of sensitive clays. The analysis results indicate that the compression curves of the remolded Ariake clays can be normalized by the void index proposed by Burland. But most natural Ariake clays lie well above the sedimentation compression line. Salt removal is considered to be the main factor for natural Ariake clays lying above well the SCL.
