In vitro techniques of bioadhesion employ mucin, biological tissue samples such as natural mucous, saliva, animal tissues like guinea pig ileum, rabbit stomach mucosa, bovine sublingual mucosa, etc. These methods have inherent problems of availability of tissues, high inter and intrasubject variations, are expensive and also involve ethical issues due to animal sacrifice. In an attempt to develop polymeric substrates, as substitute for biological substrates, a number of synthetic and semisynthetic polymers were screened and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was selected as a suitable substrate~1.
