A Learner Centred Assessment of Quality for Online Education: Course Climate

The Technical University of British Columbia is committed to de development and delivery learner centered courses that have an online component an emphasis on collaborative learning. Assessing the quality of these courses requires a new approach. The TQM theory suggests that providing the client with a high quality product at all times is a very important constituent of quality. The social environment "climate" has a positive effect on students satisfaction. This paper describes the development and adaptation of an instrument that measures climate for online courses and the importance of using the results of the applications as an important stage of the of the overall TQM process that includes an ongoing monitoring and modification of the learning environment based on climate assessment.
