The use of theoretical soil-pipe interaction solutions in the development of rationallimit states design procedures for buried pipes is described. Rational procedures of this type permit avariety of pipe classes to be considered. The basis of these solutions is reviewed, and the manner inwhich it can be used to address important limit states for each pipe class is outlined. The presentation isillustrated with examples of new equations developed over the past decade for use in design of metal andthermoplastic culverts. Illustrations include the presentation of typical experimental evidence used toassess the performance of the theory, and its limitations.
