The microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of a novel HSLA bridge steel_have been investigated. Optical microscopy, scan electron microscopy were employed to examine the microstructure of the steels. Corrosion behavior of the steel was studied by using a laboratory-accelerated test that involving cyclic wet/dry treatments in a chloride containing environment (5 wt.% NaCl). The rust structure was analyzed by optical observation and X-ray diffraction. A carbon steel (Q345) and a weathering steel (Con-Ten A) were utilized as contrasts. It was revealed that the novel HSLA steel consists of ferrite and bainite, while Q345 and CorTen A steels are constituted by ferrite and pearlite. The susceptibility of the steels to corrosion could be listed in the following order based on their weight loss (from high to low): Q345 > CorTen A > the novel HSLA steel. In addition, the corrosion products on the tested steels were composed of a Joose outer rust layer and a dense inner rust layer. The outer rust layer of each steel was composed of magnetite (Fe_3O_4), α-FeOOH, γ-FeOOH, H_2O, and amorphous ferric oxyhydroxide (FeO_x(OH)_(3-2x), x = 0 - 1). Finally, combining the results of the accelerated tests and the rust layer analysis, it can be concluded that the novel HSLA steel possesses better weathering properties than the CorTen A for use in the humid and salty atmosphere.
