Effect of Niobium Addition on Zn-coated 590 DP Steel

The effect of Nb on the tensile properties, stretch flange formability and bake hardenability of 590 MPa TS grade DP steel is discussed. The base chemical composition was 0.05%C-2%Mn-0.5%Cr steel. The effect of Nb on the above-mentioned properties was studied using 0.05%Nb added steel. Cold rolled sheets were heat treated to simulate the heat cycle in the GA (galvannealing) and GI (galvanizing) processes. The effect of cooling rate after annealing at 850°C was also investigated to understand the allowable range of cooling rate on actual galvanizing line and the transformation behavior. It was found that the addition of 0.05%Nb results in improved elongation, stretch flangeability and bake hardenability. YR (yield ratio) of approximately 50% and YPEl (yield point elongation) of 0% were obtained in all steels. In the range of cooling rate after annealing from 2°C/s to 50°C/s, all steels displayed the typical DP property, that is a low YR and no YPE1. These excellent properties in Nb-added steel are attributed to a fine ferrite grain microstructure, together with fine martensite and fine interparticle spacing of martensite.
