The effect of bake hardening and pre-straining plus bake-hardening on the microstructure, and mechanical properties has been investigates in a thermomechanically processed (TMP) TRIP steel alloyed with Nb, Mo and Al. The steel was characterised before and after bake hardening by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction.(XRD), atom probe tomography (APT) and tensile tests. The microstructure of the thermomechanically processed TRIP steel consisted of polygonal ferrite, bainite, retained austenite and martensite. Fine Nb carbides were detected in the microstructure by TEM. In addition, APT has revealed the presence of Nb-, Mo-, Fe-, C- containing clusters. Bake hardening was performed on samples with and without 4% pre-strain. The observed higher yield strength of bake-hardened samples in comparison with the TMP samples was due to the interaction of dislocations with the iron and niobium carbides, as well as C-Nb-Mo-Fe clusters. The pre-straining and bake-hardening treatment led to the further increase in the yield strength due to the increase in the number density of dislocations, fine particles and clusters.
