On-line Softening of Medium Carbon Steel through TMCP and Its Application

A new thermomechanical control process (TMCP) was developed for high speed wire rod mill at Masteel. Through TMCP, wire rod quality was improved by controlling the recrystallization of deformed austenite or grain growth and subsequent austenite transformations. In 2004, Masteel has successfully produced medium carbon steel wire rod with fine microstructure and spheroidized cementite through TMCP, which could shorten or even eliminate the time and energy consuming of spheroidization annealing heat treatment. In this paper, the main features of the new TMCP and one of its applications to medium carbon steel wire rod for the manufacture of cold forged fastener are described.
