In the past several years, aramid pulp and short fibers have been used to reinforce power transmission belts. Now, other industrial and even tire applications are investigating the value of using aramid pulp reinforcement for increasing short elongation modulus, inhibiting crack growth, and improving overall tear strength. The main obstacle in utilizing these fibers in more applications is their inherently poor incorporation properties into the elastomer matrix. Rhein Chemie has developed an enhanced processing procedure that allows these fibers and pulp to be pre-incorporated into a polymer binder which significantly improves the dispersion and resulting performance of the compound. Now power transmission belts as well as the other new applications can benefit from the superior fiber dispersion of this new technique.
