Recently, many transportation operators in Japan have been collecting dynamic traffic data from the vehicles they operate and utilizing these to upgrade their operations. These data are also useful to road administrators, and are viewed in terms of their potential use in advancing traffic management. In this study, we analyzed road traffic utilizing dynamic traffic data collected from taxis, buses, and trucks in the Nagoya area. As a result, it was found that dynamic traffic data is highly applicable to advancing traffic management, as it allows for the computation of indices that are useful in considering: 1) the management of roadwork; and 2) measures for improving the efficiency and promoting the use of public transportation.
