Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor (PMLSM) is the core of rope-less mine hoist system. Optimal mathematic model of PMLSM is established by considering maximum of electromagnetic force and efficiency and minimum of whole motor's volume. The genetic algorithm using a niche method can be applied to the problems that require multiple solutions in the search space. An Improved Niche Genetic Algorithm (INGA) automatically tuning up the cross and mutation probability is proposed and used to find more optimal solutions including overall optimal solution and local optimal solution. Through application to the numerical examples, it is verified that the niche-based algorithm is effective. The INGA is applied to optimal design of PMLSM and some reasonable and satisfied results are obtained. The whole volume of PMLSM and consumption of NdFeB permanent magnet are reduced greatly, meanwhile the performance targets such as power factor and efficiency are improved obviously.
