It is very important to design a rational and practical timetable for a given mass transit line. Based on an analysis of the behaviour of bus passengers and the benefit of the transit companies, the problem was formulated as a nonlinear optimization model with the objective of minimizing the total waiting times for passengers at the bus stops in this paper. At the same time, an occurrence that the part of passengers could not board the first arriving bus due to the traffic congestion was adequately considered in modelling the problem. A heuristic procedure using Genetic Algorithms was also presented. Finally, the proposed model and algorithm were successfully tested with the help of a real-world case. The study indicated that the proposed method could effectively solve the problem for designing timetable of a public transit line.
