In order to study the effects of soil compaction and soil physical and chemical characteristics after the land reclamation, we selected lands, which were reclaimed after 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years and 5 years separately, in Majiata Mine of Shendong Open Pit, tested the effects of soil compaction and collected soil samples in 5 different depths, which were 3 inches, 6 inches, 9 inches, 12 inches and 15 inches separately. The result showed that: (1) Land reclamation led to soil compaction. There was the lowest effect of soil compaction in the top layer and the highest one in the depth of 20-30cm. (2) The bulk density of reclaimed soil was higher than that of no disturbed soil, which declined with the reclamation and nearly reached the level of no disturbed soil after 5-year-reclamation. (3) The content of reclaimed soil nutrients was lower than no disturbed soil. There was a lowest one in the soil dumping site, which reached the level of no disturbed soil after 5-year-reclamation. (4) The pH value of reclaimed soil is lower than no disturbed soil. There was a highest one in the soil dumping site, which declined with the reclamation.
