In the context of developing a long-term strategy for European human spaceflight and exploration ESA has been conducting several activities with stakeholder communities as well as architecture and system studies with industry. In extensive consultations three priority Themes and a set of specific Objectives for each of the domains of science, economy/innovation and policy in Europe were derived. They provide the basis for the development of an integrated scenario for European space exploration, which responds extensively to the priority Themes and Objectives and maximises the synergies across all major stakeholder communities. Against the background of the ongoing activities towards international coordination for future space exploration and the published Global Exploration Strategy, the integrated European scenario provides a basis for Europe to act simultaneously as a strong player and a contributing partner in international space exploration programmes. The integrated scenario, which ranges up to about 2020/2025, should consist of the following three core elements: ⅰ) Human operations in LEO with a high degree of autonomy; ⅱ) Autonomous automated lunar surface operations for logistics, cargo and ISRU demonstration; and ⅲ) Mars robotic activities, pursuing the objectives of the European science community.
