Study on Phase Sequence at Intersection Based on Traffic Conflict

The reasonable design of phase sequence is one of key factors for signal controlling at intersection. Currently, the research on design of phase sequence is few, generally left first straight later or straight first left later base on custom and one directional traffic flow discharged the other followed. In this way, it results in conflict at phase-switching and space resource waste and decrease of capability, which is even worse, bringing to potential danger. This paper, taking typical four-phase intersection as example, and introducing the traffic conflict concept, through analyzing running condition and safety of traffic flow at phase switch, proposes the optimal design method of phase sequence that the arrangement of phase sequence should be that the traffic flow which can arrive at the conflict point ahead should be given green light in advance. Finally, it also analyzes actual example using VISSIM simulation software, and proves the validity of the method.
