Sustainable development, a concept which entails development activities to meet today?srequirements without compromising the needs of future generations, is being encompassed for almost allactivities ranging from international mega ventures to national level individual projects. Therefore, thebuilding industry, which makes a significant impact on the social, environmental and economic well-beingof the society, has a prime responsibility in meeting with sustainability requirements in all facets of thedesign, construction and operation of buildings. This paper, which illustrates the formulation of ameasurement system to appraise the sustainability of the operation and maintenance of existingbuildings, is one such effort at meeting with the global demand for sustainability. The inspiration for theresearch is created by current research and sustainability efforts of the building industry. The feedbackfrom professional and building and allied industries makes a vital contribution in the formulation of thefinal measurement system, a sustainability index.
