Prior to the 1990s, paper drawings and paper contract documents were the standard mediumfor building infrastructure information. Since then, CAD drawings and other electronic documents havebecome the standard. Inexpensive stand-alone and web-based databases have also proliferated. As aresult, information on many older buildings is still in paper form. This paper describes a project thatbegan in the autumn of 2007. This project outlines the beginning of the creation of an electronicdocument archive for the construction documents of the Maritime Forestry Complex Corporation; includedis an assessment of requirements and a description of initial stages of implementation of technologicalchange.The Maritime Forestry Complex Corporation (MFCC) operates a 47,000 square metre facility which wasbuilt in 1987 and houses up to 500 people. The project entails four phases: assessment of the inventoryof construction information, the scanning of drawings, interface design research, and use of theincremental approach to technological change. The process of assessing the inventory entailedunderstanding the building and the documents, estimating the number of documents, determining the keyinformation to record, and conducting a pilot study on the amount of time required to record informationfor a construction document database. Progress on scanning the drawings has included completingcomparisons of resolution and quality and recording this in a flow chart for use on subsequentcomparisons. Research of interface options entailed listing factors that will influence the choice of aninterface, compiling a list of uses for the data to be displayed in the interface and researching softwarepackages available to act as an interface. The final phase describes MFCC?s incremental approach totechnological change.
