AR (Augmented Reality) technologies is the one of the promising information technology by which we can see 3D objects generated in the computer onto the actual scene through a tablet PC, a smart phone or a head-mounted display. The paper introduces the application of the AR technology to the work of shipbuilding factories. The paper gives the general information of AR technologies with its importance especially in manufacturing industries. Then, the paper describes the concrete development of the AR application. The author developed the AR application for supporting workers for the sheet metal forming works in shipyard, and its demonstration was held in the actual shipyard. The worker can get effective information intuitively by the application, and this information is for example the difference between the present shape and the target shape or the work procedure for the next step. The paper introduces the detail function of the AR application, and evaluates its effectiveness by the demonstration. The paper concludes with describing the future possibility of the AR technologies in the shipbuilding industry, and various applications are pointed out to other shipbuilding work process.
