摘要

This paper aims to give marine designers an understanding of the regulatory framework related to the use of materialsfor the construction of the interiors for yachts of various sizes. The purpose of these regulations is basically to preventthe occurrence of fire or minimise its spread from the space of origin and to provide safe escape for all persons onboard.Various authorities play different roles in the construction of yacht interiors, all aiming to avoid or reduce the risk to lifeor damage to property from a fire incident, and these roles will be explained. Some examples of construction will also beoffered to provide a better understanding of these requirements. The intent to use materials which are traditionallyassociated with luxury interiors but struggle to comply with the relevant requirements will also be touched as in somecases this results in extended discussions between the owner, the designers and the regulators.Finally this paper aspires to offer an insight into the knowledge required by everyone involved in the construction ofyacht interiors and therefore contribute to the construction of aesthetically pleasing and safe vessels.
