Implementing surface treatment of flexible web material into the vacuum metalizer isan optional way to enhance the adhesion of a subsequent depositing material.Tailored properties such as barrier, mechanical or electrical, could be enhancedwhich would give an additional value to the final products.We report an investigation of pre-treated flexible web with pulsed DC magnetron glowdischarge plasma with respect to barrier properties demanded for the packagingindustry. A correlation between adhesion of the metal on the polymer and other filmphysical properties are presented here to distinguish the importance of pre-treatmentalso at high speeds for wider widths, and homogeneous metalized aluminum films.We further determine the surface energy prior to metalisation, scratch force andadhesion tests subsequent to metalisation, in order to substantiate the correlation ofpre-treatment with pulsed DC power.These investigations were carried out recently at the latest high productivitypackaging machines designed and manufactured at Leybold Optics.
