A few key challenges to utilizing a merged sanitary/storm sewer system were identified. One ofthe more significant challenges was the separate routines used to determine the inflow to therespective systems. The empirical, unit hydrograph methodology used in the sanitary sewermodel does not interact with the deterministic, overland flow routing calculations used in thestormwater collection system model. If a new model were to be constructed where onemethodology could be applied to both systems (e.g. the unit hydrograph methodology applied tothe storm sewer model, or the runoff routing applied to the sanitary sewer model), the mergedmodel would be much more effective and useful.
