In order to study effects of bromide ions on the coefficient of proportionality between trihalomethanes formation and chlorine consumption under rechlorination conditions, experiments were carried out in the pilot-scale water distribution system with 570 m2 area. Four factors named flow velocity, pH, concentration of bromide ions and rechlorination were investigated. Experimental results showed that effects of flow velocity and pH on the coefficient of proportionality were small because of huge chlorine decay in bulk water from old pipe. The coefficients of proportionality about bromodichloromethane (BDCM) and dibromochloromethane (DBCM) increased with concentration of bromide ions. The coefficient of proportionality about chloroform decreased with concentration of bromide ions, but effect of bromide ions on tetrachloromethane (TCM) was not significant. Rechlorination conditions can decrease the coefficients of proportionality about BDCM, DBCM and increase chloroform, and also could not change TCM. The experimental results are more close to the actual situation, and have better applicability to water distribution systems.
