Generalized design does not apply for all sites or all dam heights. Designers should adapt proven guidelines to specific site conditions. Design of past and moderately high CFRDs; with central single layer reinforcement, was acceptable and economical as slabs were not very thick, slab-compression was moderate, and the central reinforcement distributed heat of hydration tension cracks. This concept is still being used even for high dams/ thick slabs, by placing added emphasis on higher-degree of compaction.
