At Omarugawa Pumped-storage Power Station, the initial impoundment, or water filling of its lower dam (gravity-type concrete dam) was completed in May 2006, while that of its upper dam (rockfill dam with asphaltic concrete facing) was completed in March 2007. Both dams have been operating for approximately four years since their commencement. To understand the dams’ structural stability, Kyushu Electric Power has continuously carried out measurements in order to be aware of different phenomena which may emerge over a period of years and evaluated seismic performance during earthquakes. This report describes the results of measurements which were carried out separately during construction, initial impoundment and operation of the upper and lower dams, and also their stability evaluations focused on seismic performance, and future management.
