This paper presents a comparative study on 2D and 3D ultrasound (US) guided percutaneous renal puncture in terms of accuracy and robustness. To conduct the comparison, we introduce a US guided navigation system. First, an optimal needle trajectory is preoperarively planned from 3D reconstructed magnetic resonance (MR). Then the MR planning is transferred to the operating room by means of feature-based rigid registration of MR and 2D/3D US. To guarantee the correct execution of the planning, a navigation interface is provided to guide the puncture procedure. We compare the performance of the 2D and 3D US guidance by two evaluations. The first compares the accuracy, precision and robustness of the MR to 2D and 3D US registration on real data provided by volunteers. The second compares the puncture accuracy of 2D and 3D US guided intervention via abdominal phantom tests. The results suggest that the use of 3D US increases the accuracy and robustness.
