The substantial economic and social implications of damage to ports and marine infrastructure brought about by recent earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and Japan have reminded the structural engineering community about the particular sensitivity of pile-supported marine structures to seismic actions. Despite evident progress in the seismic analysis, design and detailing of pile-supported marine structures, every new earthquake seems to have the "ability" to expose weak areas and highlight the need for further improvement of existing design provisions.
