Finite element analyses demonstrated that a combination of jet grout block and slab was very effective in controlling inward wall displacements for bottom-up construction in soft clay. It is recognized that inward wall displacements prior to strut installation must be minimized for effective bracing. A jet grout block, formed along the retaining wall, that extends to a higher level above the jet grout slab allows the possibility of resisting inward wall displacements at the earlier stages of excavation. The jet grout elements also improved basal stability of the excavation by restricting heave close to the retaining wall.
