Involving Students in Geotechnical Research from Their Early Career

In majority of the US universities, the first geotechnical engineering course is introduced only in the junior year. This study shows that students exposed to hands-on laboratory experiments before or during the time they take the first geotechnical engineering course could significantly enhance their interest in geotechnical engineering related research. In this study, 61 undergraduate students and 19 graduate students were involved into different geotechnical engineering related research projects at different stages of their academic standing - sophomore, junior, senior and graduate level. The student outcomes were assessed for 6 years through the student achievements such as GPA, post-graduation job situation, advancement to higher level study, developed leadership skill, acquirement of scholarship/fellowship and other awards. Moreover, the study shows that students involved during the junior year showed a significant improvement in the co-curricular as well as extra-curricular activities.
