Paper for recycling is typically sorted after collection and before being delivered to paper mills. The sorting in such plants effects the quality of the raw material for recycled paper significantly and during the last years enormous progress in sorting technologies has been made by introducing near infrared or visible spectrum wavelength based sorting processes. A systematic investigation and optimization of such sorting processes is difficult since up to today no standard for systematic sampling of such heterogeneous materials like paper for recycling is available and technical models for the processes used in sorting plants are also missing.
