Teaching Collaborative Skills: The Results of an Interactive Symposium

Despite the introduction and increase in collaborative project delivery methods in recent years, academia is lagging in preparing students for collaborative practice. Approximately 70% of faculty members teaching collaborative project delivery methods, such as Design-Build and Integrated Project Delivery, lack firsthand industry experience with the project delivery methods. In an effort to improve the teaching of collaborative skills, the authors conducted a two-day interactive symposium for nearly eighty students in which the students actively engaged in exercises on topics outlined in the American Institute of Architects Integrated Project Delivery Guide: process, team formation, communication, compensation, risk, and agreements. Surveys were conducted at the outset and conclusion of the symposium to determine the efficacy of the interactive exercises. The paper will discuss the initial survey conducted that helped to serve as the basis for the development of the symposium, the symposium exercises, and the results of the survey regarding the efficacy of the symposium.
