The engineering project team (EPT) depends on the skillful and experienced combination of professionals in order to complete one project. Hence, with the development of construction industry, knowledge heterogeneity continues to strengthen and increases the difficulties of team communication. However, there has been very little empirical research to test whether the influence of knowledge heterogeneity on team performance is mediated by facets of team communication. It is found that through team communication effectively in EPTs can maximum offset knowledge heterogeneity and promote team performance. This paper provides useful insights into how EPTs should encourage employees' team communication behaviors or actives so as to reduce the negative effects of knowledge heterogeneity that will in turn enhance engineering project team performance and leading to benefits for the organization as a whole. The value of this paper is to point out that successful teams were characterized by higher levels of team communication ability when compared to their unsuccessful counterparts. Based on this study's empirical findings, managerial implications for building up team work are provided.
