The Searchwater radar entered service on the RAF Nimrod MR2 in 1980. This radar represented a major advance on the previous generation of magnetron air to surface vessel (ASV) radars that had evolved from the early days of radar in WWII. This paper describes the operation of the radar and estimates its likely performance using modern analysis methods.
