Temporal-spatial collaborated protection and control: The next generation security defence system for hybrid AC/DC bulk power systems

Modern power systems are undergoing a series of evolution that significantly complicate system dynamics. As such, the conventional security defense system (SDS) which relies heavily on physical models, numerical simulation, and event-based scanning, may fail to function effectively. To prevent power systems from blackouts, a new objective-oriented grid SDS (OG-SDS) with temporal-spatial collaborated protection and control is proposed in this paper. The new OG-SDS has features such as: 1) protection and control with the same objective at the same temporal scale share information for collaboration; 2) local, area, and global control or protection with the same objective at the same temporal scale are coordinated; 3) different objectives are independent for effective management. We illustrate the fundamental principles and the framework of the OG-SDS, discuss several important issues including its software, hardware, as well as management, and present technology roadmap for its development.
