A novel transmitarray element based on only one layer of dielectric substrate and operating at 20 GHz is proposed. The element consists of only two metallic layers of cross dipoles and rings connected by four vias through a single layer of the substrate. The location of vias as well as the length of dipoles are tuned to achieve a phase range of 320°with magnitude loss less than 1.25 dB. The proposed element can be also used in multipolarization applications owing to a good isolation between the two orthogonal dimensions along x- and y-directions. Compared with conventional designs that feature a multilayer structure, the proposed unit cell has only one dielectric substrate, therefore demonstrating its great potential for low-profile transmitarrays.
