This article examines the connection of Hofstede's cultural dimensions with the consumption of opioid pain medications by country. Correlation analysis shows a significant correlation of the increased consumption with the individualism-collectivism dimension, with a higher score for individualism correlated with higher consumption. The examination of this finding reveals that the need for independence, autonomy, self-reliance, and control-traits that are more typical for individualism-can explain this correlation. The article describes the implications of this finding for designing educational information products for opioid awareness campaigns and provides directions for future research.
