Global consumption of fossil fuels has led to a level of carbon in the atmosphere never before seen and, consequently, an increasingly erratic climate. Efforts to combat anthropogenic climate change center on greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction. The widely agreed upon target is to keep global temperature increase at or below 2°C. At the current rate of global emissions, that target will never be reached. In an effort to bring some structure and science to the global emissions reduction effort, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), World Resources Institute (WRI), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) partnered to form the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These organizations recognized that without science backing emission reduction goals, the 2°C scenario (2DS) will never be realized. Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is an environmental consulting and planning firm that wants to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability efforts and reduce GHG emissions in line with what science tells us. This paper documents ESA's experience setting a science-based target (SBT) using the step-by-step process created by the SBTi and provides valuable insight to those in the consulting sector who wish to set a SBT of their own.
