Construction Costs of Titanium Hull Variants - Game Changer?

The construction costs of titanium as a hull structural material are determined utilizing a production process model suggested by the National Shipbuilding Research Program Panel SP-4. Construction process factors for titanium are taken from previous work in the literature or estimated. Unit construction costs in $/ton are then developed and compared to those previously determined for a steel hull vessel. These unit costs are then applied to the author's previous work on a large trimaran vessel and construction costs for the entire vessel are determined for three titanium variants including a version with the entire hull of titanium, a second with the shell and weather deck only of titanium and a third with the underwater shell only of titanium. In previous studies by the author presented at TSS 2018 cargo carrying ability, acquisition costs and costs associated with maintenance and fuel for all variants were used to determine how many equivalent steel ships they could displace, without actually identifying a specific cost for the titanium variants. Herein, actual costs are identified. There are essentially no production based cost estimates for construction of titanium ships available in the literature. The work reported herein provides an initial basis for a bottoms-up analysis providing those cost estimates.
